The Dragon Boat Festival, known as "Duanwu Jie" in Chinese, is a traditional holiday celebrated on the fifth day of the fifth month of the lunar calendar. This festival is rich in history and culture, with its origins dating back over 2,000 years to ancient China. It primarily commemorates the life and death of the famous Chinese scholar and poet, Qu Yuan, who lived during the Warring States period.

Qu Yuan was a loyal minister who was banished for opposing corruption and advocating for reform.  In despair, he drowned himself in the Miluo River.Upon learning of his death, the local people raced out in their boats to try and save him or at least retrieve his body. This act is said to have originated the dragon boat races that are characteristic of the festival today. As part of the attempt to protect his body, the locals threw rice dumplings called zongzi into the river to prevent fish and evil spirits from harming him.

Today, the Dragon Boat Festival is celebrated with various activities. The most prominent are the dragon boat races, where teams paddle in harmony in intricately designed boats to the beat of drums.  These races symbolize the effort to rescue and later commemorate Qu Yuan. Another key tradition is the making and eating of zongzi, which are sticky rice dumplings filled with different fillings and wrapped in bamboo or reed leaves.

As per tradition, all staff of Boli BioProducts received a delightful gift of savory zongzi and salted duck eggs to celebrate the Dragon Boat Festival.
